Family Fun—Visit a Wild Blueberry Farm or Museum
Farms listed below are offering tours and a number of family-friendly activities, plus you can purchase delicious fresh wild blueberries.
Belfast Blueberry Cooperative’s Cattail & Sky Field is on the east end of Levenseller Mountain, along the Lincolnville/Belmont town line in Lincolnville. A green rope starts at the small stone parking pull-off, and leads PYO blueberry folks uphill on an unimproved woodland path about 650 ft. to the blueberry crop, ending at the old Emile Rivers blueberry winnowing machine. There are ticks, stinging insects, sharp stubble from cut tree sprouts and other threats on this wild property; please pass at your own risk, and be careful! No chemical bug repellants can be used in this Certified Organic field, but essential oils are fine.
Additional parking will be arranged on a grassy place along Lincolnville Rd., a few hundred ft. north of the stone parking pull-off.
The field and blueberries are protected by a Maine Farmland Trust Forever Farms easement, and Certified Organic by MOFGA. Blueberry blossoms are pollinated by 100% wild bees and insects, who have enjoyed this biodiverse field since 1990 when 80 years of forest growth were removed. Deep soil and eastward slope protect this oasis of berries from frosts and droughts, for a reliably sweet and plentiful crop. Community involvement is invited; many people help with autumn and spring field-care in trade for PYO blueberry credit.

Ruth Fiske and Nicolas Lindholm own and operate Blue Hill Berry Co., and have been farming certified organic wild blueberries for 26 years, currently managing about 50 acres in 7 fields across 5 towns on the Blue Hill peninsula. We harvest and process 25,000 to 30,000 lbs. of our own fruit per year, and now in our new facility will be processing other organic growers’ fruit. Most of our crop is processed on site and marketed direct through on-farm sales, farmers markets, group orders, CSA’s, and we freeze thousands of lbs. as well.
We will be on hand on Saturday, Aug. 3, 2024 from 10 am till 4 pm, and Sunday, Aug. 4, 2024, from noon to 4 pm, to show visitors a small wild blueberry field in production and tour our new building, with the opportunity to purchase either fresh or frozen organic wild blueberries.
Children and small groups are welcome, dogs are not. The facility is handicapped accessible. Our crew may be working in the processing room on Saturday, so there may be protocols and procedures in place that limit accessibility to some parts of the building (for food safety reasons).

Visit a low bush blueberry field we are currently harvesting as well as a field that will be harvested next year. We rotate our fields so that we pick 35 acres each year and have another 35 acres which will be harvested the following year. During the field visit you will have the opportunity to try your hand at hand raking wild blueberries. We will also demonstrate our walk-behind mechanical pickers. Next, we will take you inside the factory where we process and pack our wild blueberries for sale. Food safety is a major issue in the processing area so you will get a brief lesson on what you must do if you want to try your hand at processing or packing berries. We will explain how the fresh lines operate and you will be able to see how we handle both the raw berries and the finished products. We will also explain how we comply with the USDA tracking system. Each individual product has a tracking number to indicate the field where the wild blueberries were picked and the date they were picked. Lastly, we will visit the value-added kitchen area. Here you will see the various value-added products we make including blueberry jam, blueberry vinaigrette, and blueberry syrup and have the opportunity to purchase these products as well as any of our fresh pack pints, quarts and/or 5 and 10 pound boxes of fresh wild blueberries.
A representative from the Piscataquis County Soil and Water Conservation District ( PCSWCD) will be joining us on Sunday of the Wild Blueberry Weekend. They will have a table with a variety of information about “their educational services, brochures for our public lands ….and resources geared toward forestry and agriculture.”

The Blue Passion Sour packs a punch of flavorful ingredients that come together to create a unique and delicious brew. Maine Malt House 2 Row Barley and wheat give a sturdy base while Dark Wheat and Oat Malt add depth to the flavor profile. But it’s the infusion of Passion Fruit and Maine Blueberries that really bring this beer to life. A touch of Columbus hops rounds out the brew and highlights the juicy fruit notes. At 4.5% ABV, this brew is perfect for sipping on a warm afternoon or pairing with your favorite dish. Don’t be surprised if you find yourself reaching for another sip of this refreshing and vibrant beer.
The Kitchen at Bigelow will be serving a scrumptious wood fired pizza, “The Wild Maine Blueberry”. Build on Bigelow’s locally sourced pizza dough with our spent grains, flour from the local grist mill and developed especially for us by The Bankery & Skowhegan Fleuriste. After hand tossing, the dough is smothered in wild Maine blueberry compote, bourbon smoked bacon, mozzarella, gorgonzola and finished with balsamic vinaigrette tossed arugula.

Unlike traditional flavored vodkas that end up tasting artificial, ours is infused with the flavor of wild Maine blueberries that are steeped for days before we filter off the alcohol and mix it into our classic vodka recipe. The difference is evident from the moment you open the bottle to find a wonderful, aromatic blueberry bouquet. The end result is a true 80 proof blueberry flavored vodka that promises real taste. From 12-5 pm, on Saturday, August 5th, two blueberry cocktails will be served in our tasting room. We will be closed on Sunday, August 6th.
