We are so pleased to have an opportunity to talk about the vital and constantly-changing world of health and nutrition and how it intersects with how we plan our meals, what we buy at the grocery store and ultimately what we put on our plate. We especially look forward to connecting with an energetic public that shares these interests.
There is a staggering amount of news in the world of nutrition. Today, superfoods is the buzzword, organic foods reign, and high-fat, high-calorie diets no longer fit the fashion. To think, for example, that a mere century ago, antioxidants were known primarily for their use in preventing corrosion! Now, their role in disease prevention is close to miraculous: we know that those who consume antioxidant-rich fruits and vegetables have a lower risk of heart disease, can preserve brain function and can protect themselves against some cancers. And, the health benefits are just beginning to be uncovered. Ongoing studies focused on antioxidant activity implicate heart and vision health, blood pressure, obesity, and diabetes.
Positive health discoveries have a direct impact on us, the consumer. As we seek out foods that deliver high-quality nutritional value, the produce section of the supermarket grows to accommodate those shopping smart — for themselves and their family. Even the definition of the produce section itself has changed to include the frozen food aisle, which is attracting consumers to its shelves for the prices, product availability and nutritional value that can be found there.
The field of healthy aging and disease prevention is at an apex, and the spotlight is on food. The more we discover about the benefits of nutrition, the more we are able to empower ourselves and our families in an effort to remain healthy, energetic and productive well into our “golden” years.
